Old Master Technique

In an age of mass media imagery and digital reproduction Ryan follows a path of Old Master technique. He layers thin glazes over hardwood panels - thin transparent skins that build up to a finished surface. This process is slow and requires drying time between layers. It also involves looking past quick results and not loosing sight of that original drawing or layer beneath. This is testament to his ethos and reflects in his theoretical, moral and literary interests.

Bumbling Utopia (Oil on Oak Panel)

The Bee is a symbol of a model community. Their industry, focused goals and ability to live in harmony was used as a metaphor by Thomas More. In More's book Utopia, he describes a perfect imaginary island - this island's imaginary existence is further emphasized by the definition of Utopia which means "a nowhere land". This painting acts as a symbol of that notion, a comment on this nowhere land in which we exist today - possibly a failing Utopia or a world that believes it is already perfect in its technological bliss. We bumble on and easily miss community - unlike the sweet seeking bee.
